Five risks of PCOD Nobody Talks About

1.PCOD can lead to infertility:

Not all women diagnosed with PCOD will have pregnancy issues, however, PCOD still ends up as the prime cause of infertility in women. PCOD makes a woman’s reproductive cycle unpredictable. As a result ovulation may occur erratically or won’t happen at all. PCOD also brings the increased chances of miscarriage. To induce ovulation, often medicines are prescribed to the patient and in some cases Ovarian Drilling helps to stimulate ovulation.

2. Hormonal Imbalance disturbs the mind:

According to a case study published in the Journal of Behavioral Health Services & Research, PCOD complications may contribute to psychiatric problems. General anxiety disorder, Depressive disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder are few of the conditions observed frequently in patients diagnosed with PCOD. The study also found that women with PCOD had significantly higher levels of psychological distress than the general population.

3. Insulin Resistance:

In the year 2012, studies conducted in the UK mentioned that PCOD affects various aspects of the human body due to the hormonal imbalance. Women with PCOD have higher risk of being diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. Their testosterone levels start to increase at an uncontrollable rate. The root of PCOD is the condition Insulin Resistance which doesn’t let the female reproductive system function properly.

4. Chances of Sleep disorder increases:

Sleep disorders like Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and Excessive Daytime Sleep (EDS) are strongly associated with Insulin Resistance. The initial sign of sleep disorder is snoring. If lifestyle changes don’t help you deal with sleep apnea, you can use a Continuous Positive Air Pressure (CPAP) machine that prevents snoring and Sleep Apnea. However, it has to be worn as a mask before you fall asleep.

5. Endometrial Cancer:
Endometrial Cancer is one of the commonly diagnosed cases among women.
Health conditions and lifestyle factors can play a crucial role in increasing the estrogen levels. Estrogen secretion keeps the endometrium (lining of the uterus) growing. Women affected with PCOD face further complication, they don’t secrete progesterone. Progesterone is another hormone that is responsible for cleaning the lining of the uterus. Due to constant unchecked growth of the uterus lining, long term irregular bleeding occurs which can ultimately lead to an endometrial cancer.
